Transportation is one of the things that supports people's living needs in carrying out daily activities. In line with the increase in the amount of transportation, it is directly proportional to the increase in traffic violations such as not using a helmet, incomplete vehicle registration, violating traffic signs, etc. From the problem of violations found being a question regarding the performance of the Traffic Police in handling traffic, another problem was also found that the supervision carried out by the Traffic Police was still lacking, because it was only carried out at certain times, the importance of regulations among the community was lacking due to socialization and knowledge regarding traffic is still lacking, and police are still found accepting bribes. So this research aims to see how accountable the performance of the Medan Police Traffic Unit is in handling traffic violations in Medan City.
The research method used in this research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out using interview techniques, observation, documentation and literature. Data was analyzed qualitatively with indicators Koppel (2005) includes; transparency, liability, controllability, responsibility and, responsiveness.
The results of the research show that transparency by the traffic police is still lacking, the public cannot freely access traffic information because it is confidential and they are afraid of misuse. Then the liability indicators include giving rewards and punishments to the performance of traffic police, giving rewards in the form of certificates of appreciation and even promotions, and punishments are carried out with warnings and even dismissal. The third indicator is controllability which is carried out by traffic police by taking to the streets directly and using monitoring through ACTS, indicators of responsiveness in carrying out performance adhering to Law No. 22 of 2009, police law, standard operating procedures (SOP) and code of ethics, indicators Lastly, the responsiveness of traffic police in handling problems still needs improvement because challenges are still found in handling them. However, improvements and enhancements are needed, especially in terms of openness to the public, increased supervision, and higher responsiveness, especially in taking action against traffic violators.
