Indonesia is a developing country which in its development requires increased productivity in the economic field and development in infrastructure in order to advance a country. Because a country can be said to be developed if the economic conditions are stable and the population in a country is prosperous. Indonesia is a country with abundant natural resources, especially having many islands so as to obtain excess water resources, it is necessary to process the drainage system in each region so that the water flow becomes stable.
In this research I will discuss the dimensions of drainage channels, especially in North Sumatra Province, Medan Tembung sub-district precisely on Letda Sujono road. Drainage is a water building that is used to control the size of the flow discharge in an area, so that flooding does not occur. The drainage channel on Jalan Letda Sujono has dimensions that are insufficient to accommodate water discharge because of the dense population around Medan Tembung, where every year population growth continues to increase and the land for water absorption is reduced for the construction of houses. So this research evaluates the dimensions of the drainage channel on the Letda Sujono road in Medan Tembung District which is the main road between Medan City and Deli Serdang.
Researchers conducted an evaluation using primary and secondary data processing in the field. Then conducted hydrological and hydraulics analyses on drainage channels. Researchers used rainfall data for the last 10 years and calculations using rainfall intensity with the algebraic average formula then using the Log Pearson III distribution for a 5-year return period. After comparing the existing capacity of the channel with the planned flood discharge, it was found that the existing channel on Jalan Letda Sujono could not accommodate the planned flood discharge, which resulted in water overflowing out of the channel and inundating the surrounding area. To overcome these problems, it is necessary to evaluate the dimensions of the drainage channel.
