    Abstract
The shortage of clean water is increasing with the rapid growth of human population, industry and environmental pollution. This water scarcity can be overcome by using a solar still to convert seawater into fresh water. In this research, freshwater productivity is increased by using the addition of a conventional single basin made of glass right in the center of the solar still and also using palm shells as heat storage material. There are 3 solar stills built namely double basin (DBDS), conventional single basin (SBDS) and single basin with 3 kg of palm shell (SBDS Shell) three solar stills were examined with respect to temperature, freshwater productivity, and thermal efficiency. This study was conducted on the 4th floor of the Master of Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Sumatra with a latitude of 3.43°N and a longitude of 98.44°E. After comparing the results show the productivity of the results obtained from conventional SBDS which is 1216 g, at DBDS which is 1232 g and SBDS with the addition of 3 Kg oil palm shells which is 1615 g, the highest productivity is in SBDS with the addition of oil palm shells which is 1615 g, has an increase of 32.81% compared to conventional SBDS, has an increase of 31.08% compared to DBDS and DBDS has an increase of 1.32% compared to conventional SBDS. The thermal efficiency obtained for conventional SBDS is 26.34%, for DBDS it is 26.73% and for SBDS with the addition of palm kernel shells of 3 Kg amounted to 35.08%.
