Growth and Production of Sugar Cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) using Different Seeding Methods and Ages of Planting Material
Abstract
Sugarcane production does not yet meet national sugar needs, so advanced cultivation techniques are needed, such as seeding methods and the age of planting material. Conventionally sugar cane plants are propagated using mules or stem with 2 -3 buds. Now we have a method using one bud (bud chip) or one single bud (bud set). This research aims to detemine the two seeding methods at different ages of planting material This research was carried out on the land of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan with altitude of ±32 meters above sea level starting April-November 2022. This research used a factorial randomiced block design with 2 factors, namely: The first factor seed method (bud chip and bud set) and the second factor of the planting material (6 months, 7 months and 8 months). The results showed that the method used and the age of the sugar cane palnting material had no significant effect on all observed variables, plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, number of tillers, number of stems, number of stems production and production stem weight as well as the interaction between the two factors.
