Background and Aim.
Telerehabilitation reduces the risk of acute COPD exacerbation, the number of hospital
admissions and the burden on emergency care facility. Malnutrition weakens the lung
structure, elasticity and function, and the strength and endurance of respiratory muscle
which will lead to lower functional capacity and higher mortality risk. This study aimed to
discover the effect higher frequency of home-based upper-body strength and endurance
training program, on the fat-free mass of COPD patients during COVID-19 pandemic
Methods
• This clinical study used a quasi-experimental design with one pre-test post-test group
involving 22 stable COPD patients. The workout was conducted 4 times a week for
one month with additional intake of 7 eggs-whites per exercise in patients’ diet.
• Respondents received the training instructions on one session at the hospital, after
which they had to do independently at home. They then sent photos and videos of their
training sessions to be monitored and evaluated.
• Prior to and after the completion of the study, both groups had their fat-free mass
measured using Omron Karada Scan to evaluate the effectiveness of the home-based
rehabilitation. The statistical analysis used was the Wilcoxon and Pair-t Test.
Results
Post upper-extremity endurance training, the group showed a significant increase in fatfree
mass from the baseline 40.6±5.88% to 41.6±5.62%. The upper-body strength training
group also had a significant increase in fat-free mass from 48.38±8.83% to 50.11±9.51%.
Conclusions
Both of the upper-extremity strength and endurance telerehabilitation programs and the
additional egg-white diet had significantly improved the fat-free mass of COPD patients.
