    Abstract
    This research describes the development of tourism in Tanjungpinang City from 1980 to 2002. The purpose of this research is to explain the history of Tanjungpinang City and the development of tourism in Tanjungpinang City before and after 1980. The methods used in this research are heuristics (data collection), critical verification (data authenticity), interpretation (analysis of sources), and historiography (historical writing). In collecting data, this research uses library study and field study methods. The library study used literature in the form of books in the Riau Islands Province Library and Archives Office, books and journals in the Cultural Preservation Center library, books in the Tanjungpinang Archives Building. Field studies were conducted by interviewing resource persons and observing historical places. From this research, the results obtained in the form of information that the visit of people from Singapore, Malaysia, and others to Tanjungpinang has been formed since the time of the Malay Kingdom. The strategically located region, with the Malay community as the indigenous population, openly welcomes people of various ethnicities. The ethnic diversity has left historical remnants in the city's architecture and culture, making Tanjungpinang a city rich in tourist attractions. Based on the 5 tourism components, Tanjungpinang before 1980 tourists tend to visit historical buildings while after 1980 tourists enjoy recreational and entertainment places. Along with the opening of Bintan Island and Batam area in 1980 as an industrial and tourism area of Riau province, Tanjungpinang City developed into an administrative city, an autonomous city, and as the capital of Riau Islands. The conclusion drawn from this research is that, based on tourism development components, Tanjungpinang before 1980 featured tourist attractions in the form of visits to historical buildings, trading, and eating typical culinary from various ethnicities. In contrast, after 1980, Tanjungpinang developed into a city with various festivals that were increasingly developed, lodging places accompanied by nightlife began to increase and entertainment tourism such as recreational parks began to be built.
