    Abstract
This research aims to determine the media literacy of students at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Universitas Sumatera Utara using media literacy assessment criteria by the European Commission. The research employs a descriptive research by interviewing eight students from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara and 2 people representing the Diploma Three (D3) Study Program within the Faculty of Cultural Sciences resprectively. A purposive sampling technique is used to determine the informants, namely sampling technique with certain considerations. The results of thzs research show that: 1) Media literacy is seen from Personal Competence: (a) Technical ability of the students are good starting from using electronic media to online media (b) The ability for critical understanding has not been carried out critically in terms of analyzing information available in the media, while the ability to evaluate media content has not been carried out in depth because there are no students who compare sources of information obtained from various media. 2) Media literacy seen from Social Competence find that students are less able to create media content as it is not done regularly except to fulfill course assignments given by the lecturer, and students are quite active in communicating media content on social media. 3) In terms of Media Availability, students are able to distribute and access information in the media and can participate actively in public affairs. 4) In terms of Media Literacy Context, the results are still not good because the average students never take part in educational activities and they have disseminated information that is not necessarily true.
