Deskripsi dan Fungsi Musik Gendang Erjaga-Jaga dalam Acara Adat Kematian pada Masyarakat Suku Karo, di Desa Talun Kenas, Kecamatan Stm Hilir, Kabupaten Deli Serdang

Abstract

This research focuses on description and function of Gendang Erjaga-Jaga Music in Traditional Death Events in Karo Communities in Deli Serdang District STM Hilir, Talun Kenas Village. Gendang erjaga-jaga or often called landek gendang erjaga-jaga is one part of the death ceremony in the tradition of the Karo people. This tradition is carried out to guard the body at night before the traditional funeral ceremony which takes place the next day. In this event there are dances accompanied by gendang simalungun rayat and gendang perang-perang. The purpose of this research is to describe the presentation and function of simalungun rayat and gendang perang-perang in the erjaga-jaga event. In discussing the description and musical function of the gendang erjaga-jaga the author uses the theory of function and weighted scale. While in explaining the relationship between landek and music in the sustainability of the gendang erjaga-jaga in the traditional death ceremony of the Karo tribe, the author uses the theory of the relationship between dance and music. This research uses a descriptive, qualitative approach. Data collection was done by literature study, interviews, recording, and laboratory work. The results of this study show that there are two gendang described in this study, namely the gendang simalungun rayat and the gendang perang-perang. Both gendang are very important compositions in the program. These two gendang are always presented, where the gendang simalungun rayat is at the beginning, and the gendang perang-perang at the end. Gendang Simalungen rayat and gendang perang-perang have several functions, namely as a communication function, physical reaction function emotional disclosure function, symbolic function, community integration function, ritual validation function.
