    Abstract
Background: Food additives in the form of artificial coloring are often added to packaged drinks. The levels of artificial coloring must be taken into account because they can be dangerous to health if they exceed the appropriate levels. One of the artificial colorings that is often used in packaged drinks is tartrazine. The use of tartrazine in drinks is regulated in Food and Drug Monitoring Agency Regulation Number 11 of 2019 concerning Food Additives, the maximum level of tartrazine permitted in packaged drinks is 70 mg/kg. Purpose: This study aims to determine the tartrazine content in cup-packaged drinks circulating in the city of Medan. Method: This research was conducted qualitatively and quantitatively using a sampling technique based on a simple random method. The qualitative method was carried out using thin layer chromatography. A positive result is indicated by the standard Rf value being the same as or close to the sample. The quantitative method was carried out using visible light ultraviolet spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 427 nm. Results: Research results from qualitative analysis of the five samples were positive for tartrazine. Tartrazine levels in cup packaged drinks in samples 1 to 5 respectively were 44.3209 mg/kg; 30.5795 mg/kg; 38.2301 mg/kg; 33.7449 mg/kg; and 40.6711 mg/kg. Based on the results of the levels from all samples, it shows that the levels of the Tartrazine compound in all cup packaged drink samples do not exceed the threshold according to Food and Drug Monitoring Agency Regulation Number 11 of 2019 which states that the maximum Tartrazine content permitted in packaged drinks is 70 mg/kg. Conclusion: Tartrazine levels in cup-packaged drinks meet the requirements of Food and Drug Monitoring Agency Regulation Number 11 of 2019.
