Sampoerna Academy Medan is one of the International Schools that employs foreign workers
(expatriates). The cultural diversity found in Sampoerna Academy Medan can become both
the opportunity and challenge for this organization to achieve optimal employee
performance. The research problems are categorized into three major parts, namely the
mismatch of cultural diversity management, employee disinterest to optimize their
performance and the phenomenon of leader change which causes adjustment issues toward
new leadership style. To answer these three major problems, the theories employed are
namely transformational leadership theory, the concept of cross-cultural leadership styles,
the concept of cultural diversity management and the concept of employee participation.
Data obtained are analyzed through in-depth interviews, observation and triangulation on
the employees at Sampoerna Academy Medan using qualitative methods. In addition, 12
respondents are involved in this research, including 1 local manager, 1 Filipino manager, 1
Indian manager and 2 local staff, 2 Indian staff, 2 Filipino staff, 1 Malaysian staff, 1 Chinese
staff and 1 British staff. The final results from this research obtained several
recommendations that can support performance optimization at Sampoerna Academy
Medan.
