    Abstract
In an effort to increase the productivity of Arabica coffee which is still low, the government through the Humbang Hasundutan District Agriculture Service has provided outreach and invited Arabica coffee farmers to take part in outreach activities regarding growing Arabica coffee using shade, but farmers have not yet fully implemented Arabica coffee cultivation using shade. The aim of the research is to analyze farmers' attitudes towards the recommended use of shade. To analyze the relationship between farmers' socio-economic characteristics (age, education level, income level, length of farming and land area) with farmers' attitudes towards the use of shade in Arabica coffee farming. The research area was determined using purposive sampling, while the sample was determined using the census method and the Slovin calculation method, the Likert model attitude scale method, the scoring method, and the Spearman rank correlation method. The data used is primary data and secondary data. The research results concluded that farmers' attitudes towards the technical aspects of cultivating Arabica coffee using shade were positive. The relationship between age and farmers' attitudes towards the use of shade in cultivating coffee plants is significant and strong, the relationship between income and length of farming on farmers' attitudes towards the use of shade in cultivating coffee plants is significant and sufficient, while the relationship between education level and land area on farmers' attitudes towards using shade in coffee cultivation is insignificant and very weak.
