Judgement Analysis on Two Sides of Story: Indonesia and Thailand News Articles of Sea Games Football Final

Abstract

There is a significance of critical thinking in interpreting sports news and understanding the varied events portrayed across different media landscapes. The study aims to identify the types and describe the realization of judgement attitudes used in Thailand and Indonesia news articles covering the SEA Games football final. The research paradigm used in the study is qualitative research method and utilizes discourse analysis to identify attitude devices in news articles. The findings of the research are Thailand news articles predominantly used negative social sanction judgement devices, accounting for 67% of the judgement devices, while Indonesia news articles focused more on positive social esteem judgement, constituting 62% of the judgement devices. The realization of the social esteem judgement in Thailand articles highlighted the frequent use of normality-related words or phrases, such as "celebrated" and "billed," depicting the evaluation of how unusual or customary someone's behavior is. On the other hand, in Indonesia news articles, normality-related words or phrases like "historic" and "succeeded" were often used, reflecting similar evaluations of behavior. Furthermore, the realization of social sanction judgment in Thailand articles indicated a prevalence of negative judgement, with phrases like "banned" and "chaotic scenes," aligning with the assessment of the ethical and moral conduct of individuals. Whereas, in Indonesia news articles used phrases such as "trigger" and "their pride and praise," reflecting evaluations of behavior in social sanctions. The research suggests future directions for appraisal research, including the combination or comparison with other theories and the application of additional areas of semantic evaluation in news articles.
