This research aims to investigate the characteristics of worship music at services in
three different Protestant churches in the city of Medan, which are the research
samples, namely Bethel Indonesia Rumah Persembahan Church (GBIRP),
Indonesian Protestant Christian Church Pamen-Padang Bulan (GKPIPM), and
Huria Kristen Batak Simpang Limun Protestant (HKBPSL). The research focus
involves an in-depth understanding of the musical elements used during worship
rites, including sound system format, instrumentation format, musical style/genre,
singing presentation style/method, congregational response, stage style, musical
performance plan. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The results of the
analysis show that each church has its own musical identity which is reflected in
the choice of music and presentation during worship. GBIRP tends to adopt modern
and contemporary music in its worship. This choice is reflected in the emphasis on
a more dynamic musical style, the use of modern musical instruments combined
with traditional music, and the use of technology in presenting music during
worship. In an effort to create a worship experience that is relevant to today's
generation, GBIRP often combines elements of popular music or contemporary
spiritual music in its musical offerings. GKPIPM is closer to the nuances of
contemporary music through the use of modern instruments and dynamic praise
genres in the context of its worship. HKBPSL, who used to be an organ player, still
uses the Logu Book sheet music, which is a guidebook for worship songs. Now as
time goes by, this church has shifted to contemporary music, adapting to developing
musical trends and the needs of its congregation. This research also pays attention
to the congregation's response and participation to the characteristics of worship
music. Despite variations in musical preferences among congregations, the
characteristics of worship music continue to play an important role in shaping the
religious atmosphere and worship experience. Additionally, changes in worship
music over time reflect the church's adaptation to social and cultural developments.
This research makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the role of
music in the context of Protestant church worship in the city of Medan. The
practical implications of this research can be used as a basis for developing music
worship strategies that are more contextual and relevant to the identity and values
of each church.
