This thesis is entitled “The Role of Sanggar seni in Shaping the Traditional Musician in Samosir Regency”. A sanggar seni is a place or a facility that is used by a community and a group of people for artistic activities. The sanggar seni in Samosir Regency is all studios in the administrative area of Samosir Regency. As for the object of this research is focused on several art studios that are considered the most influential in shaping traditional musician that can be observed through social activities and musical events in the form of rituals, customs, and performances. In order to examine those aspects, the writer used a field research method based on participant observation. In doing so, the writer employed interviews, field surveys, data recording and analysis. While the method used in this research is qualitative research by conducting direct interviews with relevant parties and those deemed capable providing insights and the expected understanding. In order to discuss traditional musicians that are formed by sanggar seni, the writer uses the theory fof Alan P. Merriam who discussed the meaning of being a musician and the training process involved so that he is called a musician. The purpose of this research is to determine the role of art studios which focused on the form of contribution and the efforts of the studio in the formation of traditional musician. The role of sanggar seni in forming the traditional musician has become a strategic issue amid the decreasing number of traditional musician. This has become their responsibility as conservatory vessel and the fore front of cultural sustainability. The result of the research can be used to formulate role model that can be applied to art studios that have not played a role in shaping traditional musicians.
