    Abstract
The many problems found in ultisol soil mean that if this type of soil is used in plant cultivation, the chemical, physical and biological properties of the soil must be improved, which can be done by applying biochar accompanied by NPK fertilizer. The purpose of this study was to determine the growth response of sweet potato plants (Ipomoea batatas L.) to the application of rice husk biochar and NPK fertilizer to Ultisol soil. This research was conducted using a Factorial Randomized Block Design). The first factor is the composition of the media consisting ofUltisol,Ultisol:Biochar (3:1), Ultisol:Biochar (2:1) and Ultisol : Biochar (1:1). The second factor was fertilization with NPK fertilizer consisting of 0 % (Control), NPK (Kontrol), 200 NPKkg/ha ,300 NPK kg/ha dan 400 NPK kg/ha.The results of the study it can be concluded that the application of biochar to ultisol soil can increase the growth of plant height and the number of branches of sweet potato plants, but does not affect the production of sweet potato plants (number of tubers per plant, fresh tuber weight per sample, tuber length per sample, tuber diameter per samples and average tuber weight). The application of NPK fertilizer did not affect the growth and production of sweet potato plants. The interaction between the application of biochar and NPK fertilizer had a significant effect on plant height and number of primary branches, but had no effect on sweet potato crop production. Provision of biochar can reduce the use of NPK fertilizer doses. In the composition of ultisol media with biochar 3:1, the application of NPK fertilizer 1.16 g/polibek was able to increase the growth of maximum plant length by 180.59 cm, while in the composition of ultisol media with biochar 1:1, the NPK fertilizer 1.04 g/polibek can increase the growth of maximum plant length by 197.02 cm.
