The black mangrove tree (Rhizophora mucronata) is utilized by the industry as a
material for charcoal production and construction posts. However, the bark of the
mangrove wood contains tannin compounds that have numerous benefits, one of
which is serving as an adhesive. Therefore, as an alternative to enhance its utility
beyond charcoal production, the bark and wood of the mangrove can be utilized
to extract tannin for making particle boards. The manufacturing process of these
particle boards begins with the preparation of raw materials, involving the
extraction of tannin. In this study, tannin is extracted from different sources: bark,
wood, and a combination of bark and wood, using a pressure cooker at 10-15 psi
pressure for 30 minutes at a temperature of 116-121°C. Subsequently, the particle
board production process involves mixing wood powder and the extracted tannin,
previously mixed with 37% formaldehyde in a 10ml ratio. The next step is
pressing at a compression temperature of 150°C for 15 minutes. The resulting
particle boards exhibited poor quality or brittleness. To address this, Phenol
Formaldehyde adhesive (PF) was added at a 50:50 ratio. The particle boards
produced had an average density ranging from 0.62 to 0.65%. The moisture
content varied between 10.14-11.88%, water absorption between 117.69-
144.20%, thickness swelling between 23.13-31.76%, modulus of elasticity (MOE)
between 535.15-858.25 kg/cm2, modulus of rupture (MOR) between 3.17-5.27
kg/cm2, and internal bond strength (IB) between 0.19-1.15 kg/cm2. The particle
boards met the physical property requirements of JIS A 5908(2003), except for
thickness swelling, while the mechanical properties did not meet the standards of
JIS A 5908(2003).
