dc.description.abstractFossil energy, especially petroleum, is a non-renewable energy source and its existence is increasingly diminishing, power plants with the renewable energy concept have the potential to be developed in every city in Indonesia. Wind power plants are power plants that convert kinetic energy from air into mechanical energy. Wind power plants in Indonesia still utilize average wind speeds above 6.4 m/s. Low wind speeds should also be able to produce electrical energy, although not as much as energy generation at high wind speed levels, but low wind speed levels can also contribute to meeting the electrical energy needs of an area. In this research, the author will carry out a vertical shaft wind turbine design study for low average wind speeds in the city of Medan so that North Sumatra can maximize the use of wind energy throughout the area. The author will design a vertical shaft wind turbine using Qblade software. The author carried out a comparative simulation of 3 types of airfoils, namely NACA 0011, NACA 0015 and NACA 0019 with variations in Reynolds numbers of 5.33 104, 7.11 104 and 8.88 104 and variations in wind speed of 1.5 m/s, 2 m/s and 2.5 m/s, it was found that the NACA 0011 airfoil type was the most optimal wind turbine with a lift coefficient value of around 0.91 and a glide ratio of around 34.5 at an angle of attack of 9.5 which could produce a torque of 0.033 Nm and The estimated power that can be generated is around 683 Watts at a wind speed of 2.5 m/s.en_US
