    Abstract
    This research is entitled Interpersonal Communication Process of Women's Dormitory Students at the University of North Sumatra (Qualitative Study of USU Women's Dormitory Students). This research aims to determine the interpersonal communication process of female dormitory students at the University of North Sumatra as well as to determine communication barriers and how to overcome interpersonal communication barriers for female dormitory students at the University of North Sumatra. The method used in this research is qualitative with data collection techniques using observation, interviews and documentation techniques. Observation is an empirical scientific activity that is based on field facts and texts, through five sense experiences without using any manipulation. The purpose of observation is description, in qualitative research it gives rise to theories and hypotheses. The object of this research is the interpersonal communication process of women's dormitory students at the University of North Sumatra. The subjects in this research were active USU students who lived in the women's dormitory. Determining informants in this research used the Purposive Sampling Technique. This research uses the theory of self-disclosure to produce effectiveness in communicating with student informants in the USU Women's Dormitory. Self-disclosure is an individual's ability to inform others about their opinions, thoughts, feelings, ideas and concerns to achieve harmonious and close relationships. The results of this research show that 1) the interpersonal communication process of boarding school students USU women have 6 stages including: contact, involvement, familiarity, fading, recovery and termination, 2) obstacles in the interpersonal communication process for USU women's dormitory students including: mechanical, semantic and human obstacles, 3) how to overcome process obstacles USU women's dormitory student communication includes: increasing feedback, being friendly, respecting each other, and carried out directly and indirectly.
