Endophytic Yeasts of Soursop (Annona muricata Linn.) and Their potential to Produce Organic Acid and Inhibit Aspergillus Flavus and Aflatoxins Their Produce
Abstract
Soursop is a habitat for several species of endophytic yeasts that potential to
produce organic acids. The aim of this study was to study endophytic yeasts of soursop
i.e. Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, Rhodotorula sp., Kloeckera sp., and Candida sp. that
produce organic acids that inhibit toxigenic Aspergillus flavus and aflatoxin
production. The ability of yeasts in producting organic acid was conducted by in
potato extract medium for 10 days (29℃). Toxigenicity A. flavus was determined using
Coconut Agar Medium (CAM). The ability of each endophytic yeasts in producing
organic acid was conducted by inoculating one ose of A. flavus at the center of the
CAM medium in petri dishes. All plates were incubated for 5 days (29℃). The
parameter determined based on colony diameter and the presence of yellow pigment
on the bottom of the medium at petri dish. Result showed that all endophytic yeasts
were potential to produce organic acid, inhibit A. flavus growth and aflatoxin
production. Among endophytic yeasts, Candida sp. was the highest organic acid
producer (0,00354%) followed by Rhodotorula sp. (0,00353%), whereas, Rhodotorula
mucilaginosa was the highest growth inhibitor and aflatoxin production of A. flavus.
