The ethanol extract of Sambung nyawa leaves has the potential to reduce liver
histopathology and blood sugar levels generated by alloxan in rats (Rattus norvegicus
L.). The present study investigates the impact of sambung nyawa leaf extract
consumption on liver shape, which is the color, the weight and the volume, as well as
the histology, including the parenchymatous condition, the hydropic changes and the
necrosisof the rat heart. The study employed an experimental methodology utilizing a
Completely Randomized Design. The study involved the random assignment of twenty four male rats (Rattus norvegicus L.) weighing between 150 and 200 grams to six
treatment groups, each with four replications. The experimental cohort consisted of
normal rats (K-); diabetic rats(K+) generated through alloxan without any type of
treatmen; diabetic rats (P1) administered by metformin at a dosage of 45 mg/Kg BW
and diabetic rats (P2, P3 and P4) administered by ethanol extract derived from
sambung nyawa. The duration of life is extended at doses of 100, 150 and, 200 mg/Kg
BW. The study found that the ethanol extract of sambung nyawa leaves had no impact
either on weight or volume, but the color of the heart shifts to normal exhibition
similarities to typical fluctuations. The ethanol extract derived from sambung nyawa
leaves induces detrimental effects on the hepatocyte cells, resulting in
parenchymatous, hydropic, and necrotic changes.
