    Abstract
This research is entitled "The Role of Mabalu (Single Mothers) in Parenting Patterns in Toba Batak Ethnic Families in Tarutung" which aims to analyze the assistance strategies of Single Mothers (Mabalu) and examine the obstacles of a Mabalu using Structural Functional Theory which was carried out in Tarutung, Regency. North Tapanuli. This research method uses descriptive qualitative by conducting in-depth interviews with 13 informants and observations. The results found were 1) Parenting Strategy for Toba Batak Ethnic Children who use Democratic Parenting Patterns, 2) Barriers to becoming a Namabalu, namely the presence of stigma, economic factors, less involvement in traditional events and less consideration in the family, feeling lonely. 3) The source of enthusiasm for a Namabalu after her husband left her. In the analysis, the dual role of Mabalu occurs due to social dysfunction and causes adaptation of the system according to circumstances and needs and there are differences between the parenting style of Mabalu (single mother) and complete parenting in the Toba Batak ethnic group which has an impact on children. This paper hopes that the Toba Batak ethnic community will be more involved positively and actively and help the life of a Namabalu and that future researchers can examine the parenting patterns of single fathers (balu).
