Abstract
Objective:
Analyzing the relationship between lumbar disc degeneration to facet joint osteoarthritis (FJOA) and ligament flavum hypertrophy (LFH) on lumbar MRI examination at H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study linking lumbar disc degeneration with FJOA and LFH based on lumbar MRI examination in 128 patients diagnosed with lumbar disc degeneration in 2023 who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Lumbar disc degeneration is assessed according to Pfirrmann's criteria, FJOA is assessed according to Weishaupt's criteria and LFH is stated when the thickness of the flavum ligament on the lumbar vertebrae is >4 mm.
Results:
From 128 patients, 236 segments of lumbar disc degeneration were obtained with the most degeneration segments in L4/L5 (46.2%) and bulging as the most degeneration type (91.1%). Grade IV degeneration is the most degree of degeneration (87.3%), FJOA grade II is the most degree of facet joint osteoarthritis (71.6%) and 91.9% of the segments encountered LFH. Based on the analysis using the Fisher-Freeman-Halton Exact test, it is known that there is a significant relationship between lumbar disc degeneration and FJOA (p<0.001). Likewise, there was a significant relationship between lumbar disc degeneration and LFH (p=0.002).
Conclusion:
There is a significant relationship between lumbar disc degeneration and facet joint osteoarthritis (FJOA) on lumbar MRI examination. Likewise, there is a significant relationship between lumbar disc degeneration and ligament flavum hypertrophy (LFH).
