Abstract

Background: Reference collections are one of the library collections that have high scientific weight information that can be used for study and research purposes, or

presented with reference services.

Aims: This research aims to determine the use of reference collections for readers at Universitas Medan Area (UMA) Library.

Method: This research uses data collection methods by conducting literature reviews, observations, interviews and documentation.

Results: The results of this research show that the types of collections provided by the UMA Library are reference collections and can be accessed by library users, totaling 983 collections. Students enter the reference room, students fill in the provided visit book, students give their student card to get a key to the hag storage locker, students look for the reference collection that has been provided by the UMA library and students can ask the librarian on duty if they want to find information that is not available. Printed reference collections cannot be borrowed.

Conclusion: The role of the reference librarian at the UMA Library is to help search or browse the thesis collection and also the printed text book collection and other reference collections, explain the existence of the UMA repository to find online collections, and answer reference questions to reference library users.
