Analysis of Lightning Arrester Damage at PT. Solusi Bangun Andalas Cement Plant (Lhoknga – Aceh Besar)
Abstract
A breakdown of lightning arresters occurred from 2021 to 2023 in the Raw Mill and Kiln Outlet areas on the Medium Voltage Switchgear (MVS) at PT. Solusi Bangun Andalas (Lhoknga – Aceh Besar). This study aims to investigate the causes and impacts of lightning arrester failures at PT. Solusi Bangun Andalas and evaluate their maintenance. Using problem-solving methods such as Pareto Diagram, Fish Bone Diagram, Brainstorming, and Decision Making to analyze. The results from the Pareto Diagram theory (20-80%) showed that the issues at PT. Solusi Bangun Andalas were 11.8% due to lack of maintenance and 88.2% due to the arrester's lifetime, given that the arrester had been in operation for 15 years. The Fish Bone Diagram theory results indicated that the problem was caused by the type of lightning arrester using jointing cables. Brainstorming results suggested that routine maintenance should include replacing with the jointing busbar type and installing a surge counter. The impact of the damage focused on the output section of the electrical installation from circuit breaker, while irregular maintenance and the lack of surge counters on the lightning arrester were also identified. A deep understanding of this issue is essential for developing more efficient maintenance methods and improving the reliability of industrial electrical systems
