Pemaknaan Semiotika pada Rumah Adat Suku Karo Siwaluh Jabu di Kota Medan

Abstract

This research is titled "The Semiotic Interpretation of Karo tribe’s Siwaluh Jabu Traditional House in Medan City." The aim of this research is to understand and analyze the cultural messages communicated through symbols and architectural elements in the Karo tribe's Siwaluh Jabu traditional house using semiotic interpretation. This research employs a qualitative method. Data collection methods used in this research include observation, direct documentation at the location of the Siwaluh Jabu traditional house in Medan City, and literature review. The theoretical framework of this research uses Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis, which consists of sign, object, and interpretant. The results of this research reveal that there are 23 parts of the Karo tribe's Siwaluh Jabu traditional house that have been analyzed using the triadic elements of sign, object, and interpretant. The cultural messages of the Karo tribe displayed in the symbols and architectural elements reflect the daily activities of the Karo people, their beliefs in spiritual powers, the close kinship relationships maintained by the Karo community, and demonstrate the simplicity of the Karo people's way of life.
