    Abstract
Background: Wood dust has various compounds that act as irritants to the nasal mucosa. The presence of these irritant compounds can trigger inflammation in the nasal mucosa. Wood dust is also categorized as a class I carcinogenic agent. Objective: To determine the nasal cytology of woodworkers. Methods: This research is an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. The subjects in this study were wood workers and control. Collection of specimens using a nasal brush and specimens taken in the middle of the inferior turbinate and examined at the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory. Results: It was found that 24 wood workers and 23 non-timber workers (controls) were involved in this study. The majority of subjects were 34 years old (woodworkers) and 21.22 years (control). The highest education level was in the group of wood workers, namely junior high school (54.2%) and in the controls, namely higher education (100%). Compared to controls, the wood workers had significantly more abnormal epithelial cells (p < 0.001), goblet cells (p = 0.004), neutrophils (p < 0.001), lymphocytes (p < 0.001) and metaplastic cells (p = 0.003). ). In several types of cells such as eosinophil cells (p = 0.416), basophil cells (p = 0.348) and mast cells (p = 0.666) there was no significant difference between wood workers and controls. Conclusion: There is an increase in abnormal epithelial cells, goblet cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes and metaplastic cells.
