Semiotic Elements in Ariana Grande’s Music Video “No Tears Left to Cry” as a Medium of Communication for The Manchester Bombing

This research is about semiotic elements found in Ariana Grande’s music video that represent the Manchester Bombing. A suicide bombing is an act of personal attack by a terrorist group that sends explosives to inflict severe damage. Suicide bombing can harm many things, including the suicide bomber himself. This act is carried out by terrorism which clearly aims to kill people in mass indiscriminately. This study aims to identify semiotic elements are found in Ariana Grande’s Music Video No Tears Left To Cry and describe the semiotic meaning that represented The Manchester Bombing as the medium communication. The method used in this study is a qualitative research by applying document study for data collection and interactive model for data analysis. The data visual is a screenshot from the Music Video and data verbal are lyrics of the song No Tears Left to Cry which downloaded from Ariana Grande's YouTube Channel with a duration of 03 : 58 minutes. The result shows that the semiotic elements are representament (legisign), object (icon), interpretant (rheme) and the semiotic meaning is the hidden message from the music video that aims to remember the victims of the bomb accident. The research concludes that the theory of semiotic elements from C.S Pierce can be used in various representative activities, namely the mixing of signs and how to use them. as is the case in the music video No Tears Left to Cry by Ariana Grande where the content of the video has a hidden meaning that can be studied through semiotic elements.
