    Abstract
Background: Coconut shell is the raw material for making liquid smoke which contains phenolic compounds, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids/triterpenoids and tannins which act as antifungals. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the antifungal activity of liquid smoke and the differences in antifungal activity of grade 3, 2 and 1 coconut shell waste (Cocos nucifera L.) against Candida albicans and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Method: Testing the antifungal activity using the agar diffusion method using a paper scraper with a diameter of 6 mm. Coconut shells are collected, cleaned, crushed into small pieces then pyrolyzed and distilled to obtain liquid smoke of various grades (grade 3, 2, 1). The three grades were tested for their antifungal activety against Candida albi cans and Trichophyton mentagrophytes using concentrations of 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, 15%, 10%, and 5%. Results: The results of the antifungal activity test on coconut shell liquid smoke using the agar diffusion method showed that the effective inhibition of the Candida albicans fungus was on liquid smoke grade 3 starting from a concentration of 15%, with an inhibition diameter of 14.40 mm, on liquid smoke grade 2 and grade 1 starting from concentration of 40% with inhibition diameters of 18.73 mm and 18.60 mm, and what effectively inhibits the fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes is liquid smoke grade 3 starting from a concentration of 10%, with an inhibition diameter of 14.26 mm, grade 2 and grade 1 liquid smoke starting from a concentration of 40% with an inhibition diameter of 17.00 mm and 14.90 mm. Conclusion: Coconut shell liquid smoke grade 3, 2, 1 has antifungal activity against the growth of Candida albicans and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
