    Abstract
Background: Inflammation is the body’s normal response to injury, infection or irritation as protection against damaged tissue until the immune system repairs damaged cells, removes foreign bodies or microbes. Gagatan harimau (Vitis gracils Wall.) has been widely used as a traditional medicine, especially by the Karo people. Gagatan harimau contains flavonoids, tannins, alkaloid, saponin and steroids that potentially have anti-inflammatory activity. Objective: To determine the anti-inflammatory activity of the ethanol extract of gagatan harimau on the rats induced with carrageenan using the paw edema method. Methods: This research was conducted using experimental methods which include sample preparation, simplicia preparation, making ethanol extract of gagatan harimau leaves, characterization, phytochemical screening and then extract was tested for its anti-inflammatory activity using paw edema method. Results: Ethanol extract of gagatan harimau leaves has anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan-induced male white rats with extract doses of 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, 400 mg/kg which is indicated by a significant difference in the percentage of inflammation (p < 0.05) against negative control (Na-CMC). EEDGH dose of 100 mg/kg was able to inhibit inflammation by 45.07 ± 2,27%; dose of 200 mg/kgBB by 59.74 ± 2,17% and dose of 400 mg/kg by 70,35 ± 2,23%. Conclusion: The ethanol extract of Vitis gracilis Wall. leaves has anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan-induced white rats as indicated by a significant difference in the percentage of inflammation (p < 0.05) against the negative control (Na-CMC). The dose of ethanol extract of Vitis gracilis Wall. leaves dose of 400 mg/kg is able to provide a better anti-inflammatory effect compared to the ethanol extract of tiger gagatan leaves doses of 200 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg.
