Histology of Heart Male Wistar Rats (Rattus Norvegicus L.) Given Ethanol Extract of Sambung Nyawa Leaves (Gynura Procumbens [Lour.] Merr.) in Alloxan Induced Rats
Abstract
A basic health research report in 2018 estimates that 16 million Indonesians are at risk of developing diabetes-related heart failure. Gynura procumbens [Lour.] Merr. has the potential to alleviate hyperglycemia. The ethanol extract of sambung nyawa leaves has an impact on the morphology (color, weight, volume) and histology (necrosis, congestion, and edema) of the heart. The ethanol extract of sambung nyawa leaves has the potential to treat diabetic patients with minimal histological damage to heart organs. This study employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) to investigate the impact of a therapy on a cohort of 24 male wistar rats. The experimentall groups consisted of six treatment groups: K- (normal rat group), K+ (alloxan-induced rats without treatment), P1 (diabetic rats administered 45 mg/kgBW metformin), and ethanol extract of sambung nyawa leaves at doses of 100, 150, and 200 mg/kgBW. The extract was derived from a 14-day-old tree leaf. Hearts were prepared using Hematoxylin-Eosin and paraffin. A study has revealed that the ethanol extract derived from sambung nyawa plants has a significant effect on heart weight, but not on volume. Cardiac histology exhibited necrosis, congestion, and edema as a result. A dose of P4 (200 mg/kgBW) resulted in a reduction in harm.
