dc.description.abstractPolishing is an important procedure in producing restorations that are smooth, shiny, aesthetic and have long-lasting durability. Discoloration of composite resin restorations is a challenge for dentists and can be prevented by proper polishing procedures. Blood cockle shell powder has potential as an abrasive in polishing paste. The polishing paste requires a binder to maintain the stability of the semisolid preparation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of blood cockle shells polishing paste base formulation on the color stability of nanohybrid composite resin restorations. The blood cockle shells were ground, pulverized with a ceramic mortar, sieved with a 400 mesh sieve, pulverized again using a ball-mill and then made pastes with different base formulations. Samples of 24 maxillary premolars were prepared with Class V and restored with nanohybrid composite resin. The samples were divided into 4 groups: paste with CMC-Na base formulation, paste with carbomer base formulation, commercial paste and without paste. The samples were thermocycled and immersed in artificial saliva for 24 hours. Samples were measured with a colorimeter before and after soaking in coffee solution for 7 days. The results of the One-Way ANOVA test showed that there was an effect of different blood cockle shells polishing paste base formulations on the color stability of nanohybrid composite resin restorations (p<0.05). The LSD Post Hoc Test result also showed significant differences between all groups (p<0.05). The group polished with carbomer base formulation paste showed the least color change compared to CMC-Na base formulation paste, commercial paste and without paste. In conclusion, CMC-Na and carbomer base formulation pastes both have an effect on color stability and can be developed as polishing paste for nanohybrid composite resin restorations.en_US
