    Abstract
Increased development in the industrial sector often produces waste, chemicals, or leaks from factory infrastructure that can contaminate groundwater and threaten the quality of borehole water. One of the hazardous pollutants contained in the borehole water of the Tanjung Morawa B Village settlement, Tanjung Morawa District, is heavy metals 2.922 mg/L for Fe metal and 0.689 mg/L for Mn metal, so an effort was made to reduce heavy metal levels with a batch method adsorption process. Water hyacinth is a plant that is considered a malignant weed because of its rapid growth, but has lignocellulose content. In this study, water hyacinth was utilized as a raw material for activated carbon. The activated carbon obtained was characterized using X-Ray Diifraction. Samples before and after the addition of water hyacinth activated carbon were determined the concentration of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) metals using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (SSA). The results showed that the concentration of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) metals in borehole water after the addition of water hyacinth activated carbon to the effect of contact time with variations of 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 minutes decreased with absorption of iron metal (Fe) by 93.4%; 96.7%; 97.3%; 94.8%; and 92.9% and absorption of manganese metal (Mn) by 84.3%; 87.2%; 90.1%; 94.9%, and 89.1%. The optimum time with the highest percentage (%) using water hyacinth activated carbon at 60 minutes in reducing iron metal (Fe) 0.077 mg/L by 97.3% and 75 minutes for manganese (Mn) 0.035 mg/L by 94.9%, which shows that this study has fulfilled the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 492/Menkes/Per/IV/2010 concerning drinking water quality requirements, where the allowable limit for Fe metal is 0.3 mg/L and for Mn metal 0.4 mg/L.
