Hubungan Kebiasaan Merokok di Dalam Rumah dengan Kejadian ISPA pada Anak Balita di Desa Bulu Cina Kecamatan Hamparan Perak

Abstract

An indoor smoking habit may potentially have a detrimental effect on family members, particularly toddlers. The smoke that contains hazardous substances leads to various health problems and damages lung mechanisms that cause Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) in toddlers. This research investigates the correlation between the habit of smoking indoors and the incidence of ARI among toddlers in Desa Bulu Cina, Hamparan Perak District. This quantitative descriptive correlational research with a cross-sectional design involves a sample of 107 mothers with toddlers, selected using Simple Random Sampling. A questionnaire is used as the instrument for the research. The research results indicate that 77 mothers (72%) report having a family member with an indoor smoking habit, and 82 mothers (76.6%) report ARI cases among their toddlers. The chi-square test, using Fisher's Exact Test, demonstrates an Extract sig. (2-sided) =0.004<0.05, revealing a significant correlation between the habit of smoking indoors and the incidence of ARI in young children. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to provide education and counselling to the community about the dangers of smoking indoors to protect the health of the entire family and prevent ARI.
