The Relationship Between Attachment to Parents and Social Media Addiction in Adolescents
Abstract
This study aims to determine the relationship between attachment to parents and social media addiction in adolescents. Attachment is the trust that adolescents feel towards parents, the communication that exists between adolescents and parents and the feeling of acceptance in the relationship between adolescents and parents. Social media addiction is a behavior that involves excessive use of social media that makes social media the center of an individual's life that can interfere with an individual's daily activities. The subjects were 349 high school students in Medan City aged 16-18 years (M = 16.4, SD = 0.63). Using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment Revised scale by Gullone and Robinson (2005) and the social media addiction scale that has been adapted by Napitulu & Rangkuti (2023). The scales were administered directly with pencil and paper. The research method uses quantitative correlation. The results showed a correlation value of rho = -0.141 and p = 0.004 (α < 0.05). This shows that there is a significant negative relationship between attachment to parents and social media addiction in adolescents with a weak relationship between the two variables.
