Relation between Knowledge Level and Oral Health Maintenance Behavior in Removable Orthodontic Appliance Users at RSGM USU
Abstract
Maintaining oral health specifically on individuals undergoing orthodontics
treatment with removable appliances, is one of the determining factors resulting in
successful treatment. Patient knowledge regarding oral health also one of direct
cause of compliance with oral hygiene instructions and appliance maintenance. The
aim of this study is assessing and finding the relations between oral health knowledge
and behavior amongst patients undergoing orthodontics treatment with removable
orthodontics appliances (ROA). Assisted by parents or guardian, questionnaires were
distributed to be filled by consented respondents. 85 respondents aged 7-11 years old
undergoing orthodontic treatment with ROA in RSGM USU at May 2024 were filling
the questionnaires. Observational analytics method with the approach of cross
sectional and carried out with Chi Square test was used to determine the relationship
between knowledge and behaviour of maintaining oral hygiene. The result of the
experiment shows there is significant relation between knowledge and behaviour with
the level of knowledge being on the poor side (35.5%) to enough (34.1%) and lowest
at good (30,6%). Whilst the behaviour and practice level resulted in being poor
(4,7%), enough (52.9%) and good (42.4%). One of importance keeping oral hygiene
during orthodontics treatment using ROA which generally opted for younger
children, may become insight to the adults and practitioners which would be one of
biggest determining factor for the success in treatment.
