Correlation of Giving Infant Formula and the Incidence of Diarrhea in 0-6 Month-Old Babies at Sei Baharu Village
Abstract
Diarrhea is one of the infectious diseases in the digestive tract which becomes a health problem throughout the world, including in Indonesia. The incidence rate of diarrhea is caused by some factors. One of the risk factors which affects the incidence of diarrhea in babies is giving infant formula. It is a kind of milk obtained from cattle which nutritional content nearly similar to ASI (breast milk). The objective of the research is to find out the correlation of giving infant formula with the incidence of diarrhea in 0-6 month-old babies at Sei Baharo Village. The research uses a descriptive correlation method with cross sectional design. The samples are 86 babies, taken by using simple random sampling technique The data are collected by di tributing questionnaires during the Integrated Service Post (posyandu) activities. The result of the research shows that 57 babies are given infant formula, and 53 babies are affected by diarrhea. The result of the chi square test, using Fisher Extract, shows that p=0.002 < 0.05 which indicates that there is the correlation of giving infant formula and the incidence of diarrhea in 0-6 month-old babies. The conclusion is that HO is rejected which means that there is the correlation of giving infant formula and the incidence of diarrhea in 0-6 month-old babies at Sei Baharu Village. It is suggested that mothers not give infant formula to their 0-6 month-old babies.
