Diabetes Mellitus is a non-communicable disease caused by damage to insulin
production in the body. Symptoms experienced by DM sufferers are frequent
urination, always feeling thirsty, blurred vision, feeling tired quickly, and drastic
weight loss. Hyperglycemia or an increase in blood sugar levels within normal
limits will cause various complications. Complications that occur in DM sufferers
are cardiovascular disorders and nerve disorders. This research was conducted
with the aim of determining the level of stress in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
at H. Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan. This research is quantitative
research using a descriptive design. The population in this study was 1,347 people
and a sample of 100 people was taken using purposive sampling techniques. This
research uses the PSS 10 questionnaire as the instrument. The research results
showed that 79% experienced very heavy stress, 20% experienced severe stress,
and 1% experienced mild stress. The high level of stress is caused by type 2 DM
sufferers experiencing lifestyle changes, type 2 DM sufferers changing their diet
and having to undergo treatment for a long period of time, thereby increasing the
sufferer's stress.
