This thesis is entitled The Legend of Merga Purba Ethnic Batak Karo: A Study of Literary Psychology. This research aims to describe the intrinsic elements and describe the aspects of id, ego, superego in the character of the Legend of Merga Purba Ethnic Batak Karo. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. This research uses the psychoanalytic personality theory proposed by Sigmund Freud. Based on the results of the research found, namely: (1) Intrinsic elements in the legend of Merga Purba Ethnic Batak Karo, namely: theme, plot, setting, characterisation, point of view, and mandate. (2) In addition, the research also produced the personality structure of id, ego, and superego found in the characters. In the legend of Merga Purba of Karo Batak ethnicity, there is a character Merga Purba who shows the personality of id, ego, superego. The role of id expresses deep desires and needs, ego in showing the ability to think rationally, and superego in moral awareness and social norms. There are also the characters of the Ancient King, Snake and Bird, who have more id personality that reflects the urge to find solutions and fulfilment of happiness, and superego that shows drastic decisions of prophecy to take action and provide morals and ethics. Penghulu Kampung, who has more of a superego personality that is reflected in the norms and rules given to him. In the character of Dukun Sakti Guru Pakpak Pitu Sedalanen and Angel who have the role of id, namely, empathetic reactions and pity and joy, ego which plays a role in convincing and making judgements, and has moral values and empathy as a characteristic of the superego. This research can help readers understand the intrinsic elements and id, ego, superego in the legend of Merga Purba ethnic Batak Karo and enrich the study and appreciation of literary works.
