Neighborhood Toponymy in Padang Tualang: An Antropolinguistic Study
Abstract
This research aims to identify the meaning of sub-district names in Padang Tualang District and identify cultural values in sub-district toponymy in Padang Tualang District. This research then uses an anthropolinguistic approach which connects language and culture studies. In describing the meaning of the names of sub-districts, the theory of meaning is used, while to explain the cultural values, researchers use the theory of cultural values. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The method used in data collection is the interview method. The interview method carried out by the researcher was realized using fishing techniques, face-to-face techniques, recording techniques and note-taking techniques. Researchers also use the matching method where the determining tool comes from outside the language. The matching method used in the data review stage is the referential matching method. In this method, the technique of selecting determining elements is used as differentiating referents. The results of this research found that there are two meanings of expressions, namely the meaning of advising and the meaning of expecting something. The cultural values contained in the toponymy of sub-districts in Padang Tualang District are the cultural values of peace, such as the value of solidarity in two sub-districts, the value of positive thinking in two sub-districts, the value of gratitude in three sub-districts, the value of harmony in one sub-district. Welfare cultural values such as the value of hard work in one sub-district, the value of mutual cooperation in one sub-district.
