dc.description.abstractThis thesis aims to analyze the main character, Tom Ripley based on the characterization in the novel entitled The Talented Mr Ripley. This thesis used the theory of characterization proposed by M.J. Murphy. Another intrinsic elements such as theme, settings, and plot are also analyzed in this study. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method by collecting, classifying, and analyzing dialogues and sentences in the novel as the data related to the characterization of the main character. The results show that the analysis of the main character are represented through the physical description, speech, reactions, character from another character’s perspective, thoughts, mannerisms, conversation of other characters, direct comment, and past life. The writer also found that the themes of the novel The Talented Mr. Ripley are obsession, identity, and imitation. The settings in the novel are located in New York City, Mongibello, Rome, Paris, and Venice. Last, the plot consists of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.en_US
