Sea Turtles Conservation Center with Ecological Architecture Approach in Pariaman City

Abstract

Sea turtles are an integral component of both coastal and marine ecosystems. They play a pivotal role in maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem. A healthy sea will be a habitat for millions of fish and an important source of protein for humans. However, this is not in line with the existence of sea turtles, which are gradually being threatened. The behavior of the community, including the practice of commercial fishing in turtle nests, and natural factors such as climate change, which is intensifying, contribute to this issue. These factors have the potential to disrupt the balance of marine ecosystems. Pariaman City, a small city located on the west coast of West Sumatra Province, serves as a case study. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, through Decree No. 106, established the Pariaman City Marine Walers as a Marine Park with the objective of protecting the marine ecosystem, including the coral reefs and sea turtles. The approach taken in this design is an ecological architectural approach. The objective is to restore the habitat of turtles on the coast of the conservation area, thereby encouraging them to lay eggs there. Furthermore, the project pursues a sustainable approach to the construction of tourist attractions, ensuring that the development is in harmony with the surrounding environment.
