Gender Representation in Barbie Movie 2023: A Feminist Stylistics Analysis

Abstract

This research aims to analyze gender representation in Barbie Movie 2023 using the theory of Feminist Stylistics proposed by Sara Mills (2005). This research used a descriptive method to examine how gender is represented in the movie script. The data in this study were in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and discourses organized through categorization. The application of feminist stylistic theory proposed by Mills to each level in this study shows that this movie opposes how men and women are still treated differently. Women are often described through terms with negative connotations, compared to bad things or inanimate objects, and also through physical form, weakness, and emotion without looking at their achievements. Women in this film resist traditional gender norms by portraying female characters in positions of power and authority, resisting objectification, having achievements, and expressing their opinions against marginalization.
