    Abstract
    This thesis is entitled Code Switching and Code Mixing in Buying and Selling Interactions at the Balige Traditional Market, Toba Regency: Sociolinguistic Study. This research aims to describe the types of code switching and code mixing, the function of code switching and code mixing, and the factors that occur in code switching in buying and selling interactions at the Balige Traditional market, Toba Regency. The theory used as a guide in this research is the sociolinguistic theory put forward by Suwito. The basic method used in this research is the descriptive method. The results obtained from this research were the discovery of forms of code mixing: Code mixing in the form of words, code mixing in the form of phrases, code mixing in the form of clauses, code mixing in the form of repetition of words. Types of internal code switching: Code switching from Batak Toba language to Indonesian, code switching from Indonesian to Batak Toba language. Code switching from Indonesian to Javanese. Types of external code switching: Code switching from Indonesian to English, code switching from Batak Toba language to English, code switching from Indonesian to Chinese. Types of internal code mixing: Code mixing from Indonesian to Javanese. Types of external code mixing: Code mixing from Indonesian to English. Function of code switching: To respect the speaker, to convey a certain meaning, to make the conversation more relaxed, to emphasize or convince something. Code mixing function: To look cool to respect. Factors for code switching: The presence of a third person, speaker, change of topic of conversation, interlocutor, just for prestige, to evoke a sense of humor. Factors for code mixing: Desire to explain or interpret, role identification, variety identification.
