    Abstract
Strong wind is one of the weather phenomena that could become a danger in the aviation safety. The Kualanamu Meteorological Station recorded 174 strong winds cases between 2020 – 2022, which describe the high risk of strong winds over this area. The strong wind identification at Kualanamu Airport area should be done to reduce potential loose that may occur. The identification includes dominant wind direction and monthly maximum speed using Doppler weather radar. The VVP, CAPPI V, and PPI radar analysis methods were tested on 31 dates to see vertical and horizontal wind direction and speed patterns, then compared to observation data. Detailed explanation of the three radar products and air lability analysis were provided on three incidences of maximum strong winds. Study showed that the direction of monthly strong wind had a similar pattern in certain months with the speed of 15 – 40 knots. The observed wind speed was generally greater than radar. CAPPI V wind speed was closer to observed data (RMSE 9.14) while the correlation of VVP wind speed was better than CAPPI (r=0.51). The echo pattern generally revealed a group of Cumulonimbus cloud that extend in the line shape moving from west to east and vice versa, ranging between 15 – 45 dBZ. Analysis of air lability showed the air was unstable thus supported the growth of Cumulonimbus clouds which produce strong winds at Kualanamu Airport.
