    Abstract
This study focuses on the use of ni (に ) and de (で ) particles among sixth-semester students of the Japanese Literature Study Programme, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), University of North Sumatra (USU). This research uses descriptive qualitative method with theoretical approach of second language acquisition and language learning. The purpose of this study is to identify common errors in the use of ni (に ) and de (で ) particles and analyse the forms that influence these errors. The research data were collected using interviews and written tests. The research data were ni (に ) and de (で ) particles in sentences for sixth-semester students who had studied Minna no Nihongo I and II textbooks. Most learners understand the use of ni (に ) particles for location and time well, but many have difficulty with de (で ) particles for operation and scope. The translation stage from Indonesian to Japanese shows the learners' difficulty in choosing the right particle, due to the lack of understanding of the difference in function and meaning of the two particles. This study provides an overview of students' ability and understanding of the use of ni (に ) and de (で ) particles and provides recommendations to improve the effectiveness of Japanese language teaching in the Japanese Literature Study Programme at FIB USU.
