Language Variation on Talk Show Youtube Channel

Abstract

This thesis is entitled Language Variation on Talk Show YouTube Channel. This thesis analyzes the types of language variations used on the Talk Show YouTube channel and the factors that influence the use of language variations by the host and guest stars on the talk shows. In analyzing the data, the theories of language variation proposed by Wardhaugh, R. (2006), and Labov (1990) were used to find out the types of language variations used on the talk show YouTube channel and the factors that influence the use of language variations by the host and guest stars on the talk show. This research employed a descriptive-qualitative method. The data for this research are words, phrases, and sentences from the transcription texts on the Steve Harvey Show’s video entitled “Steve Harvey Gives Ludacris Advice on Raising Four Daughters” and “Kris Jenner Is Always Ready for Christmas!”.The source of data in this research is the transcription text from the latest Steve TV show. The results of this research show that there are 80 data based on the conversation between the host and the guest stars. There are slang, argot, jargon, register, and idiom. There are 30 data used slang with a frequencyof37.5%,0datausedargot with no frequency, 15 data used jargon with a frequency of 18.8%, 21 data used register with a frequency of 26.2%, and 14 data used idiom with a frequency of 17.5%. Then, there are factors of language variation that appeared most frequently was Ethnicity with 16 utterances, 15 utterances were influenced by the factor of social class, 13 utterances were influenced by the factor of age and 5 utterances were influenced by the factor of Gender.
