Pengalaman Perawat dalam Menghadapi Pasien Jiwa yang Telah Melakukan Upaya Bunuh Diri di Rumah Sakit Jiwa Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ildrem Medan

Abstract

A nurse is the first person who interacts with a patient who wants to commit suicide so that role and function are urgently needed. Lack of effective communication, having no adequate clinical experience, and nurse's lack of knowledge has made patients reluctant to ask for and receive nurse's help related to their committing suicide. The objective of the research is to dig up a nurse's experience in facing mental disorder patients who attempt to commit suicide in the Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ildrem, Medan. The research uses descriptive phenomenological method. The informants are nine nurses, taken by using purposive sampling technique. The data are collected by conducting in-depth interview and analyzed by using Collaizi method. The result of the research shows that there are 4 (four) themes: 1) Patients attempt to commit suicide, 2) Nurses' emotional response, 3) Obstacles in taking care of patients who attempt to commit suicide, and 4) Education and family support. It is recommended that the Hospital management, the Hospital Director, provide specific training concerning the behavior or token of a patient who attempt to commit suicide.
