    Fabrication of MgB2 Superconductor Wire through Hot Rolling Process with Stainless Steel Sheets and Variations of Powder Filling Density in the Tube

    Abstract
    Variations in filling density of powder in the tube were carried out to study its on phase, microstructure and superconductivity of MgB2. Raw materials in the form of Mg powder (98.5 % purity, Merck) and amorphous B (95 % purity, PT. Luoyang China) were weighed according to stoichiometric calculations. The materials were ground for 1 hour using an agate mortar then put into a stainless steel tube of type SS 316L and the PIT process was carried out, then the sintering process was carried out using a top load furnace with a temperature of 800 ᵒC for 1 hour, then the samples were hot rolling with gradual reduction. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, Hardness Vickers and Cryogenic Magnets. The results of phase identification through XRD showed that the phases formed were MgB2, Mg2 and Fe4. Morphological structure and elemental composition as seen through SEM-EDS. From the Cryogenic Magnet test it has superconductivity properties. In MgB2 at 100 % filling density, it shows the critical temperature values, Tconset (37.83 K) and Tcoffset (30.02 K). In MgB2 at 90 % filling density, it shows the critical temperature values, Tconset (37.55 K) and Tcoffset (29.59 K). In MgB2 at 80 % filling density percent, it shows the critical temperature values, Tconset (39.25 K) and Tcoffset (31.33 K). Based on the results of the hardness test, the higher hardness value was found in the sample with a percent filling density of 100 % with 389.62 HV and a lower hardness value of 80 % filling density with 376.08 HV.
