    Abstract
    This thesis is entitled Symbols in Abit Sabe-Sabe: Semiotic Study. This research is a descriptive qualitative research which aims to describe what motif symbols are found on the abit sabe-sabe, what are the functions of the symbols found on the abit sabe-sabe, what are the meanings found on the abit sabe-sabe. The author uses the semiotic theory put forward by Charles Sander Peirce. The method used is a descriptive method located in Paranjulu Village, Sipirok District, South Tapanuli Regency. Based on the research results, it shows that the symbol motifs on the abit sabe-sabe of the Angkola/Mandailing Batak ethnic group in South Tapanuli Sipirok Regency consist of 18 motifs, namely signs, simata beads, sirat, pusuk robung, luslus, lid mumbang, iran-iran, jojak mata -mata, yok yok mata pune, room, sijobang, singap, horas tondi madin ayam matua bulung, flower, suri-suri, dalihan natolu, tugu. The shape of the symbol motif on the Abit Sabe-sabe Batak Angkola/Mandailing is geometric and decorative. The source of inspiration for the woven symbol motifs on the Angkola/Mandailing Batak ethnic abit sabe-sabe are living creatures and the surrounding environment. The meaning contained in the Abit Sabe-sabe woven motif of the Angkola/Mandailing Batak ethnic group is in the form of advice, hope and prayer as well as the family tree of the Angkola/Mandailing Batak Community.
