    Abstract
    Biochar (Biomass Charcoal) application is very potential to support sustainable agriculture because it acts as a soil amendment and ameliorant so as to improve the quality and productivity of a land. This study aims to determine the effect of applying various types of biochar on changes in soil biological properties and growth of mustard plants. This research was conducted in Pangambatan Village, Brand District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra Province with an altitude of ± 1506 meters above sea level which was carried out from July 2023 to March 2024. This study used a non-factorial Randomized Group Design (RGD) with several treatments, namely Control, Chemical Fertilizer, Rice Husk Biochar, Oil Palm Empty Bunch Biochar, Chicken Manure Biochar, Cow Manure Biochar, Rice Husk Biochar (1,51 kg) + Chicken Manure Biochar (0,168 kg), Rice Husk Biochar (1,51 kg) + Cow Manure Biochar (0,168 kg), Empty Bunch Biochar (1,51 kg) + Chicken Manure Biochar (0,168 kg), Empty Bunch Biochar (1,51 kg) + Cow Manure Biochar (0,168 kg). The results showed that the provision of various biochar had a significant effect on increasing plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, plant biomass weight, and fresh selling weight. It also affects the changes in soil biological properties. The application of various biochar significantly increased the growth of mustard plants and improved soil biological properties. The application of Chicken Manure Biochar is the best biochar that significantly increases the growth of mustard plants and shows the best production results compared to Cow Manure Biochar, Rice Husk Biochar (1,51 kg) + Chicken Manure Biochar (0,168 kg), Empty Bunch Biochar (TKKS), Rice Husk Biochar (1,51 kg) + Cow Manure Biochar (0,168 kg), Empty Bunch Biochar (TKKS) (1,51 kg) + Chicken Manure Biochar (0,168 kg), Rice Husk Biochar, Empty Bunch Biochar (1,51 kg) + Cow Manure Biochar (0,168 kg), use of chemical fertilizer and increase soil respiration, total population of phosphate solubilizing microorganisms, total nitrogen fixing bacteria, total population of microorganisms which are biological properties of soil.
